AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION I



18-Weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Textbook Included. Prerequisite: An understanding of basic electricity. This course will provide the student wiht a thorough understanding course will provide the student with a thorough understanding of the refrigeration process. Included in the course are the functions and applications of the components of the refrigeration system such as compressors, drive mechanisms, evaporators, condensers, liquid receivers, heat exchangers, expansion valves, metering devices, dryers, sight glasses, etc.

AIR CONDITIONING AND REFRIGERATION II

in the different types of heating systems, combustion controls, psychrometics and airflow for air conditioning systems. It will also include schematics reading, basic heat pump operation, as well as an introduction to colling towers and water colled systems.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION ASSEMBLY TESTER CERTIFICATION

4-Weeks, 2 Sessions Per Week, 8 Hours Per Session, 56 Hours Total. Prerequisite: None. This course provides instruction on backflow prevention theory, cross connection control laws, and backflow prevention asemblies. Assembly mechanics, design, installation, testing, and maintenance will be disucssed. A certification exam will be administered by the California-Nevada section of the AWWA at the conclusion of this course. Cost for the examination is included in the registration fee. Certification is valid for three years.

BACKFLOW PREVENTION SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION
AVAILABLE SPRING 2009

7-Weeks, 8 Hours Per Session, 56 Hours Total. Prerequisite: Current Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate. Students will learn how to check multi-piping drawings for cross-connections, conduct cross-connection surveys, use proper record keeping procedures and implement cross-connection programs and ordinances. A certification exam will be administered by the California-Nevada section of the AWWA at the conclusion of this course. Cost for the examination is included in the registration fee. Certification is valid for three years.

BLUEPRINT READING AND BUILDING DESIGN

This course will provide training on basic blue print drawing terminology and review prints used in the construction and maintenance of buildings. Design issues and techniques will be discussed along with historical perspectives, code issues, and technology changes in the building construction process.

Students will learn how to determine boiler types and styles, water treatment chemistry and troubleshooting. Field trips may be required as part of this course.

CONFINED SPACE

This class provides training in accordance with OSHA regulations that provides a basis for the safe entry and work within confined spaces, hazard identification, and the use of specialized equipment to ensure worker safety and healthy. Class size is limited to no more than 12 students for quality instruction, so register early!

The student will further develop the ability to understand various types of commercial control systems, wiring diagrams, and ladder diagrams. Pneumatic fundamentals along with Proportional Intregal Derivative (P.I.D.) theory, applications, and troubleshooting will also be discussed.

ELECTRICITY I

This class will explore direct current, alternating current, resistance, magnetism, inductance and capacitance. Students will acquire a broad knowledge of single phase and three phase generation and distribution. Through hands-on projects, students will learn how to properly use a meter to troubleshoot circuits.

This course will cover the concepts and operation of single and three phase motors. Emphasis will be placed on single and three phase distribution in facilities.

ELECTRICITY & ELECTRIC MOTOR CONTROLS I

18-Weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Textbook Included. Prerequisite: None. The student will gain an understanding of the electrical concepts needed by a Stationary Engineer on topics such as alternating current, direct current and single phase and three phase generation, transformers, and distribution. Also discussed will be inductive, capacitive and resistive cirecuits, along with power factor and power factor correction. The student will also learn various types of electrical controls used in motor control systems and will gain the ability to construct and analyze wiring and ladder diagrams used in motor control circuits. Through hands-on projects students will learn how to use a meter and how to troubleshoot motor control circuits.

The student will continue to gain an understanding of the electrical concepts needed by a Stationary Engineer in single phase and three phase generation, transformation, and distribution. The student will also learn various types of electric and pneumatic controls used in building control and motor control systems and will gain the ability to construct and analyze wiring and ladder diagrams used in these types of control circuits. Automatic transfer switches, fire pump start and stop controls, and air compressors are just a few of the circuits that will be analyzed and discussed.

EPA TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION PREPARATION, REVIEW AND EXAM *






1 Session, 8 Hours Total. Textbook Included. Prerequisite: A basic understanding of air conditioning systems. This course is recommended for those who have not previously taken the EPA exam. This eight-hour class will provide six hours of review for the CFC/EPA Certification Exam and a two-hour CFC/EPA Universal testing period. Topics include refrigeration, charging, transportation, recycling, and recovery of chlorofluorocarbons. The EPA requirements covered in this review prepare the student for all levels of certification, (Type I, Type II, Type III and Universal). FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS NEW

18-Weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Textbook Included. Prerequisite: None. This course presents an in-depth overview of Fire Alarm Systmes and explores topics such as components of a fire system, wiring requirements, benefits of Class A and Class B wiring techniques, and the three distinct types of fire system signals (alarm, supervisory, and trouble). Students will gain an understanding of maintenance and testing requirements for a fire alarm/suppression system, and will also learn about primary vs. secondary power for fire alarm systems, zone module applications, propert installation of wiring and devices, and how smoke detectors and sensors work.

Students receive Hazwoper certification in HAZCOM, MSDS, industrial hygiene, toxicology, bloodborne pathogens, and air monitoring. Students will also receive certification in respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, site control zones, confined space, site emergencies, drum handling, medical surveillance. Government regulations, employee rights and employer responsibilities will also be addressed. First aid and CPR are also included. Students will receive a certification card from the American Red Cross. IUOE Certification is valid for one year.

HIGH RISE FIRE SAFETY DIRECTOR *

This class provides instruction in facility emergency plans, fire prevention, life safety systems, evacuations, relocation procedsures, earthquake preparedness and emergency management. A facility emergency plan or term paper is required for successful completion of this course. The High Rise Fire Safety Director Certification is valid for 5 years. Students who successfully pass this course will receive 1.5 units through City College of San Francisco.

This class provides an overview of current federal, state and local laws, codes and policies as well as an overview of the responsibilities of a High Rise Fire Safety Director. This class includes a question and answer session and suggestions on how to handle specific issues at your facility. *You are eligible to renew if your current certificates date does not exceed 5 years. HVAC CONTROL SYSTEMS

18-Weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Textbook Included. Prerequisite: Controls I. HVAC = Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. This course furthers the students understanding of building automation including various types of commercial control, and the schematics and ladder diagrams used for these systems. Pneumatic and electronic control systems are discussed as well as the input and output devices for these systems. Types and purposes of controllers, operator interfaces, networking fundamentals, control strategies, proportional integral derivative (P.I.D.), and building automation system troubleshooting techniques will be covered.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY *

Course topics include preventative maintenance systems, record keeping, HVAC systems, permissible limits, investigation procedures and the process for dealing with indoor air quality issues. Total hours are comprised of 54 hours of class lecture and 21 hours of related supplemental training.

LOCKSMITHING I

Students will study and discuss topics such as locksmithing tools and supplies used in the industry, pins, key duplicating, cylinders, lock picks, pick guns, master keying and more. Students will also learn how to fit keys by impression and by reading locks.

LOCKSMITHING II

18-Weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Prerequisite: Basic understanding of Locksmithing. This course will cover the installation of different types of locksets and door closers as well as how to do the different types of adjustments on them. Troubleshooting techniques about the different types of problems that can arise from a bad installation will be discussed.

This course will provide the student with knowledge of mechanical systems and machines commonly operated and maintained by Stationary Engineers. It's designed to give a working knowledge of basic skills expected in the industry. Some of the topics of discussion will be bearings, belt drives, coupling and shaft alignment, compressors and pneumatics, pumps and seals, valves and piping, fasteners, basic rigging and safety.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR EXAM PREPARATION

18-weeks, 3 Hours Per Session, 54 Hours Total. Textbook included. Prerequisite: None. This course will assist the student to prepare for the next upcoming Waste Water Plant Operator Exam. This class will follow the Sacramento State College (Ken Kerri) course format. An objective test will be given for each chapter covered. A minimum grade point average of 70% must be maintained at the end of the course to receive 4.7 continuing education units from the Local 39 Training Department.
