BUSINESS MANAGER'S UPDATE

Fall 2010

Brothers and Sisters,

There is an old proverb: “Time and tide wait for no man”. Although by all accounts this phrase dates back to the late 1300’s, it is as viable today as it was when it was first authored. The message remains the same. Those of us that choose to rest will surely rust and those of us that choose to continue learning will shine above all the rest.

Local 39 has always believed in this philosophy and it has stood the test of time. It is evidenced in the contracts that the local continues to negotiate on behalf of the best trained engineers in the nation. We as a local union hold ourselves to the same high standard and continue to grow through expanded training opportunities that are made available to all of our members through the Local 39 Training Department.

In keeping with our ever expanding capabilities, the Local 39 San Francisco Training Center is now an authorized Pearson Vue Testing Center administering California Water Environment Association (CWEA) certification exams. The Technical Certification Program (TCP) was created to offer multi-level technical certification for individuals employed in the water quality field. Tests are written by vocational specialists and administered throughout the year in five different disciplines: Collection System Maintenance, Environmental Compliance Inspection, Laboratory Analyst, Plant Maintenance (Electrical/Instrumentation and Mechanical Technologist), and Industrial Waste Treatment Plant Operator. For Local 39 members working in wastewater operations these certificates demonstrate competency, commitment to the profession, and will help with job advancement.

For our members who wish to avail themselves of training in the Sacramento area, a new 2 day, 16 hour seminar entitled Boiler Testing Preparatory Training is now available.

Additionally, in order to offer the widest range of training availability, when reviewing this catalog, you will see details on page 18 about the Local 39 Training Department On-Site Training opportunities.

And lastly, please give special attention to our two newest On-Line course offerings that are now available:

Introduction to Chillers and Cooling Towers
Refrigeration Electricity and Automation.

Don’t waste time. Take advantage of the many opportunities that are currently available today. Remember the tide is coming in!

Fraternally,

Jerry Kalmar
Business Manager-Secretary
I.U.O.E. Vice President
